Struggling with money anxiety? Discover biblical principles and practical steps to trust God with your finances and find peace in His provision

Why Money Causes Anxiety

Money anxiety often stems from a sense of lack or fear of the future. The pressures of providing for a family, paying off debt, or saving for emergencies can feel overwhelming. But in Matthew 6:26-27, Jesus reminds us that God provides for the birds of the air and assures us that we are even more valuable.

This doesn’t mean that actions don’t have consequences, but it does mean that God has made a way for you even when you don’t see it. Let’s jump into some tangible steps you can take..

Steps to Financial Peace

  1. Create a Budget: Stewardship begins with knowing where your money is going. Make a budget that reflects your priorities and honors God.
    • Example: “This month, I’ll set aside 10% for giving, 20% for savings, and allocate the rest thoughtfully.”
  2. Practice Contentment: Shift your focus from what you don’t have to what you do. Gratitude fosters peace and helps combat the urge to overspend or strive for more.
  3. Give Generously: Giving isn’t just an act of obedience; it’s a declaration of trust. When you give, you remind yourself that God is your source, not your paycheck.
    • Example: Consider tithing, donating to a charity, or supporting someone in need as a way to reflect God’s generosity.
  4. Pray About Your Finances: Bring your financial concerns to God. Ask Him for wisdom, provision, and peace. Trust that He sees your needs and is faithful to provide. Know that this isn’t a passive thing and if God tells you to act, be prepared (this may mean sacrificing) get your heart right with God and tell him what mental & heart blockages come up for you. Prayer is about God changing us as much as it is about us depending on and communicating with God.
  5. Seek Wise Counsel: If managing money feels overwhelming, consider seeking guidance from a financial advisor or taking a course on biblical financial principles. One option is – Financial Peace University (No I’m not an affiliate for them). You can also discuss it with your local pastor, find a podcast or check out your local library for resources.
