Have you ever felt that it is hard to know the will of God? Or, maybe you are a Christian who battles with anxiety and intrusive thoughts making it difficult to know exactly what to think. Maybe you have a big decision to make and you’re not sure which direction to go (which makes your anxiety even worse!).
You’re not alone.
Thankfully, God hasn’t left you stranded. Instead, He has given guidelines and cues for helping us discern the best course of action and how to discern which thoughts are true and which thoughts are the result of an anxious mind. The journey towards discernment involves seeking guidance through prayer, reflection, and the application of biblical principles.
In this post, we will explore eight tests grounded in Scripture that can help Christians discern God’s direction in the midst of anxiety.

- Scriptural Test – 2 Timothy 3:16
The foundation of discernment lies in the Word of God. When facing a decision, ask yourself, “Has God already spoken about this in His word?” The Bible is a source of wisdom, providing guidance and clarity for various aspects of life. Turn to the Scriptures to find insights and principles that can guide your decision-making process.
- Secrecy Test – Proverbs 11:3
Consider the level of transparency in your decision. Would it bother you if everyone knew about your choice? Proverbs 11:3 reminds us of the importance of integrity. Choices made in secret, which would cause discomfort if exposed, may need reevaluation. Seek decisions that can withstand the light of truth and align with God’s principles of righteousness.
- Survey Test – 1 Timothy 4:12
Imagine if everyone followed your example. What impact would your decision have on others? The Survey Test encourages Christians to consider the potential influence of their choices on the broader community. 1 Timothy 4:12 reminds believers to be an example to others in speech, conduct, love, faith, and purity.
- Spiritual Test – Galatians 1:10
Distinguish between being people-pressured and Spirit-led. Galatians 1:10 urges believers to seek approval from God rather than seeking approval from people. When faced with decisions, align your choices with the leading of the Holy Spirit. Seek guidance through prayer and a relationship with God, allowing His Spirit to guide your steps.
- Stumbling Test – Romans 14:21
Consider the impact of your decision on others. Could it cause another person to stumble in their faith? Romans 14:21 emphasizes the importance of avoiding actions that may lead others astray. Discernment involves considering the well-being of the community of believers and making choices that foster unity and encouragement.
- Serenity Test – Philippians 4:6-7
Before finalizing a decision, seek serenity through prayer. Philippians 4:6-7 encourages believers to present their requests to God with thanksgiving, and the peace of God, which transcends all understanding, will guard their hearts and minds. The Serenity Test reminds Christians to rely on prayer as a source of peace and guidance in discernment.
- Sanctification Test – 2 Corinthians 3:18
Evaluate whether the decision aligns with your journey of becoming more like Christ. Will this choice hinder or promote your growth in the character of Christ? The Sanctification Test encourages believers to choose paths that contribute to their spiritual maturity and transformation into Christlikeness.
- Supreme Test – 1 Corinthians 10:31
Ultimately, ask yourself: Does this decision glorify God? Does it exalt His goodness? 1 Corinthians 10:31 emphasizes the importance of living for the glory of God. The Supreme Test challenges Christians to seek decisions that align with God’s character and bring honor and praise to His name.

Navigating anxiety with discernment requires a deep reliance on God’s Word and an earnest desire to align choices with biblical principles. By applying these eight tests, Christians can approach decision-making with confidence, knowing they are seeking God’s will and glorifying Him in all aspects of their lives.
