The beginning of a new year feels like a fresh start, a blank slate full of possibilities. But if you’re anything like me, this time of year can also feel overwhelming. Everywhere you look, people are setting resolutions, starting new habits, and posting their plans for “the best year ever.” It’s easy to feel like you need to keep up—or worse, like you’re already falling behind.
Instead of adding pressure with long lists of resolutions, what if you started the year with peace? This year, let’s focus on setting intentions that align with God’s purpose for our lives, bring joy, and foster balance.

Why Intentions Work Better Than Resolutions
Resolutions often focus on external achievements—losing weight, saving money, or learning a new skill. While these are good goals, they can feel rigid and unforgiving. Intentions, on the other hand, focus on internal growth and the “why” behind what we do. They are less about perfection and more about progress.
Think about this: What would it feel like to start your year by asking God what He wants for you instead of setting goals you feel pressured to achieve?
5 Steps to Set Realistic Intentions
- Reflect on the Past Year: Take time to journal or pray about the lessons God taught you last year. What worked well? What drained your energy? Use these insights to guide your intentions.
- Example: If you realized you overcommitted to activities, your intention could be to prioritize rest and say “no” more often.
- Focus on One or Two Areas: Instead of a long list, choose one or two areas where you’d like to see growth.
- Example: “This year, I want to focus on deepening my relationship with God and creating healthier boundaries in my schedule.”
- Align with Scripture: Find a verse to anchor your intentions. For example, if your goal is to simplify your life, Matthew 6:33 (“Seek first His kingdom…”) can serve as a guiding principle.
- Keep It Grace-Filled: Give yourself room to grow. Intentions are not about achieving perfection but about allowing God to work in your life.
- Revisit and Adjust: Reassess your intentions periodically. Life changes, and your priorities might too. That’s okay.

Remember, starting the year with peace is a choice.
It’s saying no to the hustle and yes to the gentle leading of God. Remember, His plans for you are good (Jeremiah 29:11). Let that truth guide you as you move into this new season.
