Perfectionism. It can be a double-edged sword: driving us to achieve great things, but also leaving us perpetually unsatisfied and burnt out. If you constantly chase an impossible ideal, a regular dose of rest and rejuvenation might be just what you need. Enter the concept of a Sabbath.
Sabbath: A Rest, Not a Rulebook
We usually think of Sabbath as an ancient Old Testament command but Jesus taught us there is freedom in Him.
But just because we have freedom doesn’t mean we should discard old teachings. God knew what He was doing when He thought of the Sabbath. He knew we would need a dedicated time to disconnect from the constant busyness and intentionally carve out space to simply be, free from the pressures of productivity. God didn’t make humans for the Sabbath he made the Sabbath for humans, knowing we all need that rest.
The beauty of a Sabbath is its flexibility. It doesn’t have to be a full 24 hours (though that’s fantastic if you can swing it!). Start small – maybe a few uninterrupted hours each week, or even a digital detox evening. The key is to choose a time and stick to it, allowing yourself to truly unwind.

How a Sabbath Battles Perfectionism
Here’s how a regular Sabbath can be your weapon against perfectionism:
Combats the “Always On” Mentality: Perfectionism thrives in a world of constant striving. A Sabbath forces you to step off the treadmill, reminding you that your worth isn’t tied to your accomplishments.
Breeds Self-Compassion: By allowing yourself to relax and recharge, you cultivate kindness towards yourself. This self-compassion is the antidote to the harsh inner critic that fuels perfectionism.
Shifts Focus from Doing to Being: When you prioritize rest, you reconnect with your inner self. This shift in focus allows you to appreciate your inherent value, not just your achievements.
Sparks Creativity: Stepping away from the relentless pursuit of perfection can free up mental space. This can lead to bursts of inspiration and a renewed sense of joy in the creative process.

Making Your Sabbath Work for You
There’s no one-size-fits-all approach. Here are some tips to personalize your Sabbath:
Discover Your Rest: What brings you peace and enjoyment? Reading, spending time in nature, or simply doing nothing are all valid options.
Set Boundaries: Communicate your need for dedicated rest time to friends, family, and colleagues.
Embrace Imperfection: Let go of the pressure to make your Sabbath “perfect.” The goal is to simply rest and recharge.
Remember, a Sabbath is a gift to you from the Lord. It is a heart posture that you don’t have to be ON because God’s got this and can work within and around our limitation. He IS a BIG God. By incorporating regular rest into your life, you can loosen the grip of perfectionism and embrace a more fulfilling and joyful way of being.
