Summer’s warmth and freedom can’t last forever, and as the days grow shorter, many of us can experience a touch of melancholy and even dread. This can be especially true for anyone who struggles with Seasonal Affective Disorder. Or, maybe you worry about the start of a new school year and what that could mean for your routine and home life.

End-of-summer blues got you down? Learn how to embrace the changing seasons with gratitude, nature walks, self-care & a goodbye ritual.

If you’re worried about the end of summertime, here are a few mindful practices to help you navigate the end-of-summer shift and greet fall with open arms:

  1. Gratitude for What Was and What Is to Come: Acknowledge the joy of summer with a grateful heart. The Bible reminds us in 1 Thessalonians 5:18 (NIV) to “give thanks in all circumstances; for this is God’s will for you in Christ Jesus.” Reflect on the memories you made, the laughter you shared, and the adventures you embarked on. Then, shift your focus to the possibilities that fall presents. Cozy nights in, vibrant foliage, crisp autumn air, and downtown Christmas lights all offer a unique charm.
  2. Walk in the Seasons: Quite literally! Take advantage of the remaining sunshine with long walks or hikes. Immerse yourself in the changing scenery. Notice the shift in light, the rustle of leaves, and the cooler touch of the breeze. Nature has a way of grounding us and reminding us of the cycle of life, with its inevitable yet beautiful transitions.
  3. Fuel Your Body and Mind for Fall: As the season changes, so do our needs. Consider starting a vitamin regimen that supports your immune system, energy levels, and mental health in preparation for fall. A multivitamin with Vitamin D (important as sunlight exposure decreases) and B vitamins (known for boosting energy) could be a good starting point. Consult your doctor to determine the best approach for you.

If you know this is a particularly difficult season, you may consider scheduling a visit with a mental health therapist or adding in an extra session or two. (If you live in FL or MA, feel free to schedule a free consult with me!)

  4. Schedule a “Goodbye Summer” Ritual: Create a special moment to acknowledge the end of summer. Have a bonfire with friends, make a summer scrapbook, or simply sit outside and watch the sunset. Reflect on the season’s highlights and use this as a springboard to brainstorm exciting plans for fall.
