Feeling stressed? You’re not alone. Anxiety is a real struggle these days, even for people of faith. But there’s good news: Christian meditation can be a powerful tool to calm your mind and spirit. It’s all about connecting with God through the Bible and prayer.

Here are some techniques I use as a Christian therapist:
- Reflect on Scripture: Think of Psalm 1. It talks about people who focus on God’s word – they’re like healthy trees, thriving no matter what. Pick a verse that speaks to you, and really think about it. Let it wash over you and calm your anxieties, reminding you of Who God is, His promises, and character. You may be surprised at home God speaks to you about that verse throughout your day, week or however long you’ve committed to reflecting on that particular scripture.
- Talk and Listen to God: Prayer can be like a conversation with God. Start by asking for peace and guidance. Then focus on a quality of God’s you admire, or a promise from the Bible. Share your worries and fears, and ask the Holy Spirit to bring clarity. I like to write my prayers because it helps me stay focused and I can re-read them later.
- Be Present with God: Take a moment each day to simply be with God. It could be a quick acknowledgement in the middle of your day, or some quiet time focusing on your breath and centering yourself on Him. Let His peace wash over you, even if it’s just for a few minutes.
It can be as simple as noticing the sun through the kitchen curtains and taking time to thank Him for making such little, beautiful things.
- Lectio Divina: This is an old Christian practice where you read a Bible passage multiple times, each time with a different focus. Read it (lectio), reflect (meditatio), respond with a prayer (oratio), and then just rest (contemplatio) in God’s presence. It’s a deep way to connect with Scripture and God.
- Gratitude and Worship: Thankfulness is powerful. Take time to reflect on God’s goodness, big or small. Sing hymns or worship songs that remind you of His greatness. When you focus on gratitude and praise, anxieties seem smaller in the face of His love and grace.
This isn’t about ignoring your problems, but about finding peace at the source – God Himself.
Christian meditation is a journey to grow closer to Him, and experience the joy and strength that come from that connection. So give these techniques a try, and see how they can help you find peace in His presence. Remember, the benefits go beyond feeling good – they connect you to the ultimate source of peace and truth: God.
