Have you ever heard of Paschal Triduum?
It is a 3 day period that begins with the liturgy on the evening of Maundy Thursday, reaches its high point in the Easter Vigil, and closes with evening prayer on Easter Sunday. This year, it will start March 28th, 2024 and end on Easter Sunday which is March 31st, 2024.
It is not merely a liturgical holiday but a beautiful time for reflection for any Christian believer.
So, let’s dive into the essence of each day – Holy Thursday, Good Friday, Holy Saturday, and Easter Sunday – unraveling the layers of humility, sacrifice, waiting, and resurrection that define the love portrayed in Christ’s final days before crucifixion.

- Holy Thursday: “The Gift of Humility”
At the beginning of Triduum, we start with Holy Thursday (Maudy Thursday), a day of profound significance. Here, the Last Supper becomes the picture of humility as Jesus, God Himself, stoops to wash the feet of His disciples. In this act of profound servitude, we find an invitation to emulate humility and service in our lives. The institution of the Eucharist further underscores the call to partake in the divine banquet with a spirit of unity and selflessness.
- Good Friday: “Embracing the Cross”
The somber shadow of Good Friday descends, inviting contemplation on the crucifixion. The Cross, a symbol of sacrifice and love, speaks to the heart of our human experiences. It is on this day that we confront the depth of Christ suffering for our sins. Rather than shying away, we are encouraged to find meaning, understanding that in crucifying our flesh, we grow closer to Christ.
- Holy Saturday: “In the Silence of Waiting”
In the hushed anticipation of Holy Saturday, we find ourselves suspended in a unique atmosphere of waiting. The Easter Vigil, kindled by the Easter fire, symbolizes the illumination that awaits in the dawn of resurrection. Embracing the “waiting” moments in our lives becomes an act of faith, a recognition that even in uncertainty, God prevails. This day becomes a profound invitation to trust in the promise of light amid the shadows.
- Easter Sunday: “Resurrection and New Beginnings”
As we emerge into the radiant brilliance of Easter Sunday, the culmination of the Triduum, we witness the triumph of life over death. The resurrection of Jesus echoes as a clarion call to personal renewal and growth. It beckons us to shed the old and embrace the new with unbridled joy. Easter becomes a celebration of overcoming, a testament to the promise that every ending paves the way for a new beginning.

The Paschal Triduum, a spiritual celebration woven with threads of humility, sacrifice, waiting, and resurrection, stands as a beacon illuminating the Christian journey. It is a pilgrimage not of mere observation but active participation, challenging us to embody the lessons learned in our daily lives. As we navigate through the depths of Holy Thursday, the solemnity of Good Friday, the anticipation of Holy Saturday, and the exultation of Easter Sunday, may we carry the spirit of the Triduum into the world – a living testament to the transformative power of faith, love, and resurrection.
