Mornings can be a real test for those of us who struggle with anxiety. The weight of the day ahead can feel overwhelming before you’ve even had your first cup of coffee. But what if I told you that your mornings could be a secret weapon against anxiety? Creating a calming morning routine can set a positive tone for the entire day.

Why Mornings Matter
The way you start your day can significantly impact your mood and overall well-being. A rushed, chaotic morning can contribute to feelings of anxiety and stress. On the other hand, a peaceful and intentional morning routine can help you feel calmer, more focused, and better equipped to handle challenges. I don’t think it’s a coincidence that this is when Jesus himself took time to be with the Lord 😉 (Mark 1:35).
Building Your Anxiety-Reducing Routine
Creating a morning routine that works for you is essential. Here are some ideas to get you started:
- Start slow: Give yourself ample time to wake up gradually. Avoid hitting the snooze button multiple times. I usually get up 2 hours before my first commitment, this gives me the first hour to spend time with the Lord and wake up slowly with my coffee and my Bible.
- Mindful moments: Incorporate mindfulness practices like meditation or deep breathing to center yourself. These exercises will also help you see when you’re holding your breath and other ways anxiety affects our breath throughout the day. Notice those things and then offer yourself a few deep breaths, you’ll be surprised at the impact this has!
- Gentle movement: Engage in light exercise, such as pilates or stretching, to release tension and boost energy.
- Nourish your body: Enjoy a healthy breakfast to fuel your mind and body.
- Limit screen time: Avoid checking your phone or emails immediately upon waking to reduce information overload. Doing this can immediately trigger anxious thoughts and To-Do Lists.
- Gratitude practice: Focusing on what you’re thankful for can shift your mindset to a more positive outlook. I like to write these things down in a prayer and the reflect on them throughout the day.

Overcoming Challenges
Consistency is key when building a new routine. It’s normal to face challenges along the way. Here are some tips to help you stay motivated:
- Start small: Begin with one or two habits and gradually add more as you become comfortable.
- Be flexible: Life happens. It’s okay if your routine isn’t perfect every day.
- Find your rhythm: Experiment with different activities to discover what works best for you.
- Celebrate small wins: Acknowledge your progress and reward yourself for sticking to your routine.
Remember, the goal is to create a morning routine that brings you peace and reduces anxiety. Be patient with yourself and enjoy the process of discovering what works best for you.
