5 ways to manage anxiety and enjoy the holiday season:
- Cultivate Gratitude:
One of the most beautiful aspects of biblical wisdom is its emphasis on gratitude. The holiday season is an excellent time to count your blessings, no matter how small they may seem. Consider keeping a gratitude journal or setting aside a specific time each day for prayers of thanksgiving. Reflecting on your blessings can help you shift your focus from what you lack to what you have. By doing this, you’ll reduce anxiety and find inner peace, trusting that God will provide for your needs.
- Set a Realistic Budget:
Financial stress often arises from overextending ourselves. Before you dive into holiday shopping or plan elaborate celebrations, sit down and create a budget. This is a practical step that reflects biblical principles of stewardship. Ensure your spending aligns with your income, leaving room for generous giving while also taking care of your family’s needs. Remember, it’s not the price tag that matters; it’s the thought and love you put into your gifts and celebrations.
- Avoid Comparison:
Social media and advertising can create an unrealistic image of what the holidays should look like. Resist the temptation to compare your celebration to others. Your faith should remind you that everyone’s journey is unique. Instead of comparing, focus on the blessings that you have in your life. When you embrace this perspective, you’ll find joy in your own way of celebrating.
- Lean on Your Faith:
Biblical wisdom teaches us that God is our refuge in times of trouble. Pray, meditate on scripture, and seek solace in your faith. When anxiety strikes, remind yourself of Philippians 4:6-7, “Do not be anxious about anything, but in everything by prayer and supplication with thanksgiving let your requests be made known to God. And the peace of God, which surpasses all understanding, will guard your hearts and your minds in Christ Jesus.” Trust in God’s promise of peace. Engage in devotionals on the season at hand to remind yourself of the reason for the season.
- Practice Self-Care:
Caring for yourself is an important part of maintaining mental well-being. Prioritize activities that relax and rejuvenate you. Whether it’s a warm bath, a long walk, or simply a moment of quiet reflection, self-care should be a part of your daily routine. In Matthew 11:28, Jesus invites us, “Come to me, all who labor and are heavy laden, and I will give you rest.” Remember that taking care of yourself is a form of self-compassion, which can help alleviate anxiety.

The holiday season should be a time of joy, gratitude, and love. With a biblically-based approach, you can manage financial stress and maintain your mental well-being.
Remember to cultivate gratitude, set a realistic budget, avoid comparison, lean on your faith, and practice self-care. By incorporating these strategies into your life, you’ll find peace and tranquility, even amidst the hustle and bustle of the holidays.
