We’ve all seen it: someone facing a tough time is met with a cheerful, “Just trust in God’s plan!” or a dismissive, “Everything happens for a reason.” While these phrases come from a place of wanting to comfort, they can sometimes fall into the trap of spiritual bypassing.

What is Spiritual Bypassing?

Spiritual bypassing is using spiritual beliefs or practices to avoid difficult emotions or responsibilities. It’s a shortcut around the messy realities of life, often leaving the person struggling even more.

In a Christian context, this might look like:

  • Minimizing someone’s pain with platitudes like, “God will never give you more than you can handle.”
  • Using forgiveness as a way to avoid addressing conflict.
  • Ignoring social justice issues with the belief that focusing on heaven is all that matters.

The Cost of Bypassing

Spiritual bypassing can have real consequences. It can:

  • Make people feel unheard and unseen in their struggles.
  • Hinder personal growth by avoiding difficult emotions.
  • Disconnect faith from real-world problems.

Addressing Spiritual Bypassing: How We Can Do Better

Here’s how we, as Christians, can avoid spiritual bypassing and offer true compassion:

  • Practice empathy. Listen deeply to someone’s pain without judgment.
  • Acknowledge their emotions. It’s okay to be sad, angry, or scared.
  • Sit with the uncomfortable. Don’t rush to fix things. Sometimes just being present is the best thing you can do.
  • Offer practical help. Can you bring a meal, watch their kids, or help them find resources?

When We’re Being Bypassed:

  • Communicate your needs. Let the person know you appreciate their concern but need them to listen.
  • Seek healthy support systems. Find people who will create a safe space for your emotions.
  • Remember, your feelings are valid. Don’t let anyone tell you otherwise.

The Beauty of True Connection

The Christian life isn’t about pretending everything is sunshine and roses. It’s about walking alongside each other in the good times and the bad. By letting go of spiritual bypassing, we create space for authentic connection, allowing God’s love to work through us in practical and powerful ways.

Remember: True Christian compassion means entering into someone’s pain, not bypassing it. Let’s walk this journey together, burdens shared and love overflowing.
