Summer vacation! A time for relaxation, exploration, and making memories. But for those of us who struggle with anxiety, the unstructured freedom can sometimes feel overwhelming. The pressure to have a perfect summer, the fear of missing out, and the disruption of regular routines can all contribute to increased anxiety levels.

However, with a little planning and the right routines in place, you can still enjoy a relaxing and fulfilling summer vacation. Here are some tips to consider:
Structure for Serenity:
- Schedule Self-Care: Block out specific times in your day for activities that help manage your anxiety. This could be prayer, journaling, spending time in nature, or simply taking a quiet break to read a book. Consistency is key, so aim to schedule these activities at similar times each day.
- Plan, But Don’t Overplan: While a loose itinerary can be helpful, avoid overscheduling your days. Leave room for spontaneity and relaxation. Remember, it’s okay to say “no” to activities that feel overwhelming.
- Maintain a Sleep Schedule: Disrupted sleep can worsen anxiety. Try to go to bed and wake up at similar times each day, even on weekends. Establish a relaxing bedtime routine to wind down before sleep.
Calming Techniques on the Go:
- Practice Relaxation Techniques: Deep breathing exercises, progressive muscle relaxation, and prayer walks are all effective ways to manage anxiety in the moment. - Carry a Gratitude Journal: Taking a few minutes each day to reflect on things you’re grateful for can shift your focus away from worries and towards the positive aspects of your vacation. I enjoy keeping a gratitude section in my phone’s notes app and also participating in round-table discussions over dinner where you can hear everyone’s gratitudes (you might be surprised at what matters most to your kiddos!)
- Embrace Nature: Spending time outdoors has been shown to reduce stress and anxiety. Plan activities that get you outside, whether it’s a morning walk on the beach, a hike in the woods, or simply relaxing in a park.
Faith-Based Practices for Peace (Optional):
- Morning and Evening Devotions: Maintaining a consistent prayer practice, even on vacation, can provide a sense of grounding and peace. These are anchors to my day and they keep me steady when vacation inevitably throws a wrench in my “plans”.
- Scripture for Strength: Choose a scripture or passage that resonates with you and offers comfort during times of anxiety. Carry it with you or write it down as a reminder. Psalm 46 is my go-to passage right now, but it certainly changes with my season of life or what God is speaking to me at the time.
- Finding Your Purpose: Reflect on how you can use your vacation to help others. Volunteering at a local charity or simply showing kindness to those around you can be a powerful way to combat anxiety and connect with your faith. Thinking – yeah right Britt I’m already inundated, the activity doesn’t have to be a whole event it can even be as simple as holding the door for someone, sending a smile someone’s way or asking how a stranger’s day is going.

Remember, a perfect summer vacation doesn’t exist. Focus on creating a relaxing and enjoyable experience that works for you. By incorporating these routines into your summer plans, you can manage your anxiety and truly embrace the joy of the season.
