majestic machapuchare mountain | Do you feel behind in your faith or healing journey? Discover why God isn't measuring your spiritual growth by someone else's timeline and how His grace meets you exactly where you are.

Have you ever looked around and thought, “I should be further along by now?” When it comes to spiritual growth, sometimes we can get discouraged.

Maybe you expected your anxiety to be gone by now. Maybe you thought you’d be more confident in your faith, more consistent in your Bible reading, or quicker to trust God when life became difficult. Instead, you find yourself wrestling with some of the same fears, questions, or habits you’ve carried for years.

If that’s where you are today, I want you to hear something that may feel difficult to believe:

You are not behind spiritually.

God is not measuring your growth against someone else’s timeline. He isn’t disappointed that your healing has taken longer than you expected. And He isn’t rushing you toward some invisible finish line.

He is meeting you exactly where you are.

Comparison Makes Us Forget How God Works

Comparison has a way of stealing our peace before we even realize it’s happening.

We scroll through social media and see people sharing answered prayers, spiritual breakthroughs, and joyful moments with God. We compare our behind-the-scenes struggles to someone else’s highlight reel and quietly wonder why our faith doesn’t look like theirs.

Maybe you’ve even compared yourself to people at church.

They seem confident. They seem steady. They seem to have everything figured out.

Meanwhile, you’re still battling anxious thoughts, asking hard questions, or wondering why healing feels so slow.

Comparison convinces us that everyone else is moving forward while we’re standing still.

But comparison rarely tells the whole story.

Every person is walking through a different season, carrying different experiences, and healing from different wounds. The pace of someone else’s journey tells you nothing about your own.

Anxiety Loves Invisible Timelines

One thing I often see in counseling is how anxiety creates unnecessary urgency.

It whispers things like:

“You should be over this by now.”

“If you were really trusting God, you wouldn’t still struggle.”

“You’re falling behind.”

Those thoughts can feel convincing, but they aren’t rooted in truth.

Perfectionism often reinforces the same message. It tells us growth should always be upward, measurable, and visible. If we’re not constantly improving, we assume we’re failing.

Yet that’s rarely how healing works.

Some seasons are full of noticeable growth.

Other seasons are quieter.

Sometimes we’re learning new skills. Other times we’re simply learning how to rest.

Neither season is wasted.

God Is More Patient Than We Are

One of the beautiful truths throughout Scripture is that God never seems as hurried as we are.

While we focus on deadlines and milestones, God focuses on formation.

He patiently walked with Moses through the wilderness.

He patiently restored Peter after failure.

He patiently shaped David long before he became king.

Again and again, we see a God who values transformation over speed.

Philippians 1:6 reminds us of this beautiful promise:

“He who began a good work in you will carry it on to completion until the day of Christ Jesus.”

Notice who is doing the work.

God is.

Your responsibility is not to force your growth.

Your invitation is to remain close to the One who is faithfully growing you.

Spiritual Growth Includes Rest

We often assume spiritual maturity always looks productive.

More Bible studies.

More serving.

More learning.

More doing.

But healthy growth also includes seasons of rest.

Jesus regularly withdrew to quiet places to pray. He stepped away from the crowds. He rested. He slowed down.

If the Son of God made space for rest, perhaps we should stop apologizing for needing it too.

Sometimes the most faithful thing you can do is stop striving long enough to remember that God is still God without your constant effort.

The Goal Isn’t Perfection

One of the biggest shifts many people experience is realizing that God is far more interested in relationship than performance.

He isn’t asking you to become the most productive Christian.

He isn’t keeping score of how quickly you’re healing.

He’s inviting you to walk with Him today.

One faithful step.

Then another.

Over time, those ordinary moments become the story of transformation.

If you’ve been looking for practical ways to renew your thinking while learning to replace fear-based beliefs with biblical truth, I invite you to join me at the end of the month in a live workshop all about Unlearning Harmful Narratives. True transformation doesn’t happen through pressure or perfection. It happens as we consistently allow God’s truth to reshape the way we think, one small step at a time.

If you feel behind today in your spiritual growth, pause for a moment.

Ask yourself whose timeline you’re measuring against.

Is it God’s?

Or is it the world’s?

Or perhaps it’s the impossible expectations you’ve placed on yourself.

The good news is that God isn’t asking you to catch up.

He’s simply inviting you to keep walking with Him.

Wherever you are today is the very place where His grace can meet you.

And that’s more than enough.

Recognizing a harmful narrative is the first step. Learning how to unlearn it is the next.

Ready to Go Beyond Recognizing the Narrative?

If this post resonated with you, you may have recognized something important:

Knowing that God isn’t asking you to keep up with someone else’s timeline doesn’t automatically make comparison disappear.

You can believe that God is working in your life…

…and still wonder why your spiritual growth feels slower than someone else’s.

You can know that healing happens in seasons…

…and still feel discouraged when you’re not where you hoped you’d be by now.

Recognizing the harmful narrative is an important first step.

Learning how to respond differently when that narrative shows up is the next.

That’s exactly why I created my live workshop:

Unlearning Harmful Christian Narratives

A 75-Minute Live Workshop

Together, we’ll explore a practical, faith-integrated framework to help you:

P.S.

You are not behind.

You are not failing.

And you don’t have to compare your spiritual growth to someone else’s timeline.

Sometimes the next step isn’t trying harder—it’s learning to let go of the beliefs that have been quietly convincing you that you’re already behind.
